If you own a compact camcorder or camera, then chances are you know all about the super versatile Joby Gorillapod tripod – now it’s gone magnetic and can hold your camera steady whilst attached to metal surfaces.

Everybody loves Gorillapod

Lightweight, easy to use, cheap and with a cool name, the Gorillapod is the tripod of choice for the amateur photographer or camcorder user. With its bendable and twisty legs, it is able to provide your compact camera/camcorder with a stable platform on essentially any solid surface. Whether on your desk, in the desert, or at the beach, the Gorillapod will prevent your camera device from shaking for a blur free image. Of course, for all of its benefits, the Joby tripod is not without complaints, most of them concerning its mini-size. The Gorillapod is only about 6 inches (15cm) tall, meaning you have to either angle your shot upwards or place the tripod on an elevated surface, in order to get a level shot with people’s faces. Now, however, the magnetic Gorillapod makes it even easier to place and hold the tripod on a high surface, since it can now attach to metal.

Going magnetic

The original Gorillapod could be wrapped around thin tree branches for a higher perch, but placing was still quite limited. With the magnetic version on the other hand, the Gorillapod can attach sideways to a metal surface, or even upside down, as long as the compact digital camera or camcorder isn’t too heavy. It will attach to even the smallest of metal areas, such as door hinges, giving you a huge variety of placement options. Its Neodymium magnetic feet are fairly powerful, allowing the magnetic Gorillapod to support just as much weight as the regular Gorillapod, namely, 11.5 oz or 325 g. Aside from the magnets, its specs are identical to the original Gorillapod, with the same colours, size, and weight.

Availability

So, if you like shooting impromptu self portraits with your friends, or want to set up a make-shift security camcorder in the hall-way, then the magnetic Gorillapod would be the perfect choice. It’s currently available on the official Joby website for $24.95, $4 more than the original Gorillapod, and there is no word on a possible UK release.
